Season well Earned

Cheering this season for the Tigers was a blast. I didn't realize til the Manatee game how good we actually are. It's an exciting thing to see, the players giving their all every game with the best attitudes they can have. The football team is definitely different than years past, and I think everyone in the community and Palmetto High School can tell. I no longer get the "oh my gosh you go there" reaction when I tell people I go to Palmetto High.
It's amazing to me how much the football team's success has really changed Palmetto's reputation. However, this winning streak that we had was well-earned and so is the newfound reputation and respect for our school that came along with it.
But think about if we hadn't gone 12-2, and instead we maybe went 9-4 and didn't make it to the playoffs? Our players still would have trained just as hard, had the same coaches, and disiplined and acted the exact same way. Without the 12-2, all of it would have gone un-noticed by the community. I feel like this is a lesson in life too: only the best are noticed, recognized, and rewarded. Sometimes it's a good and bad thing. It can motivate you, or discourage you. The Tigers decided to let it motivate them this season. Instead of looking at the odds that were constantly stacked against them, they over came it. Are you going to let this life lesson that the Tigers overcame motivate, or discourage you?

Stumble Upon

A new website has everyone's attention. Lately picture websites like tumblr, and flickr are getting bigger and bigger. These websites are especially used by teens and young adults. However, most of the entertaining websites like Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr are blocked on the school's server. But now there's a new website. It is helpful, educational, and a little different than the average website you usually see. Stumbleupon.com is a website which you pick certain categories and you submit them, and the results are websites and ideas that match your chosen topics. It's pretty neat really. Last time I was on the website I picked the category of craft ideas, and so many creative things came up. For example; how to make t-shirts with blended-in writing on them, how to make corner bookmarks, and how to paint your nails in certain ways and designs.
There's so many different things to chose from, and if you don't like the website that pop's up you can just press the "stumble" button and something new pops up. Try it for yourself and see!

Blackout Sunday Football

tampa-bay.jpg If fans want to watch the local team play, they need to attend the games because it sure isn't going to be on ESPN or Fox 13 on Sunday's anymore. At least that is the theory of NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers'. Since the start of the season, there has been 10 home games that have not been televised. In the first two weeks of the NFL season, the Bucs were the only team in the league to have their game blacked out. Some people are finding ways around this blackout, and trying their best to get the Bucs back on to Sunday afternoon T.V. Teams like the Miami Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars have bought up tickets and given them to their season ticket holders in order to get attendance up. In '09, Ramon James Stadium was sold out every Sunday, now it's just about impossible to achieve that.

Water for Elephants Review

Water-for-Elephants-movie-poster.jpg All books that are turned into movies usually have high-success rates; Water for Elephants can be added to the list of successful books turned into successful movies. With movie trailers and announcements of the actors well before the release date of early summer; this movie was bound to be a success. The movie trailers for Water for Elephants gives it the "look" or "stereotype" of being a tear-up, heart-wrenching, romance movie. It's all of that, and more. There's a couple of twists and scenes that include action, violence, and suspense. You don't normally expect that many types of genres in one movie. Water for Elephants is set in an old-fashioned circus arena, and follows the life of a young veterinarian who trains and nurses the animals under the abusive and overly-intense owners watchful eye. While on the circus circuit, the vet meets and falls in-love with the circus' main horse attraction star, who also happens to be the owners wife. This creates the suspense and intensity of the movie. This movie was extremely easy to get into. Especially with the elaborate crops, sets, and animals that are used to make the atmosphere of a successful circus come to life. The costumes are elegant and really give the movie an old-fashioned feel, and well as the make-up and over all look of the actors. What makes this movie great is the perfect match-up of two great actors. Twilight's; Robert Pattinson and Legally Blonde's; Reese Witherspoon, this movie was great, and leaves you with a sense of adventure and the encouragement of wanting success in life.

Money spent on a Pointless Marriage

Apparently the Kardashian clan was too much for Kris Humphries to handle. After 72 days, Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries have announced their divorce. Some say the whole engagement and marriage was a scam. However, whether it was a set up or not the press still would have gotten hold of the story and made a huge deal about it. There's always money to be made with these types of things, why not give it to the people that are making the story successful?
kim-kardashian-kris-humphries-split.jpg It's not how much money was made through the process of the wedding and the reality show following the love affair of Kim and Kris. The bigger deal is how much money was spent. A total of 13 million dollars was spent on the wedding. This number is hard to believe, and causes ordinary people like me to think of other uses for that money. This money that was spent on a wedding that is now completely meaningless could have been used towards college tuitions, shelters, schools, cancer research, and so much more.

Rivalry at it's Highest Point

The Tigers have been looking forward to this game day all year. It’s not about getting into the playoff’s or raising our stats; It’s about Tiger Pride. The Tiger varsity football players have prepared and trained for this game. They are going to put everything they have into tonight’s game, maybe even a little more. Since we are 7-0 it’s pretty much a given that we have to win this game in order to have the undefeated season Coach Marino has been talking about for so long.
palmetto_helmet.gif“ This week’s going to be even more of a big-game atmosphere.” says Coach Marino as he talks about the hyped up game.”
mhs200x135.jpg Our chances of winning are uncertain, however we have certain aspects that are pointing us in the direction to have the confidence of a winning team. We have the home-field advantage so more support and fans will be coming out to watch our boys play. We also do not know the feeling of losing and we for sure do not want to know what it feels like quite yet this season.
“ This game is something we have been anticipating all year long, we actually have a chance and I’m excited to see Palmetto win!” - Kelli Bennett, junior
This game is clearly the biggest game of the season for Palmetto High School. We can say there is no pressure just to reassure the players to focus on the game and do their very best, however we all know how important this game really is.

Texting > Talking ???

sprint-lg-rumor-2-cell-phone.png
Texting is the new talking. It is the way teens and young adults communicate. Older people think it is ridiculous and that the world of technology is taking away todays kids social skills. However, what people do not realize is how convenient texting is. If you are in a classroom and need to talk to your parents about what is going on after school, just simply sending them a text is so much simpler than calling them. It's often a more convenience for the people on the receiving end of the conversation, because so much now people are in situations where it is rude to answer their phone and talk, however simply glancing at their phone and typing a few keys does not cause any distractions or considered rude. I love texting, but at times I see how it is taking over the communication world which is not necessarily a bad thing if it means more convenience.

Friends in High School

In high school, there is a very important social aspect that makes getting through the day a little easier: friends. Depending on the friends you have basically says a lot about you, no matter how much someone disagrees at that statement. Who your friends are, or what group you are in determines your reputation, how you are perceived to act, and expected to do. However, so many people get wrapped up in silly little dramas that affect their friendships and who their friend groups are. People these days do not realize how important friendships really are, and how much they help you throughout life. People lose friends in all kinds of ways, over drama like boyfriends and girlfriends, and hearing that people talk about them behind their back. Yes, I admit there are always going to be those people in life that you are better off without, but so many people including myself over analyze things by being ignorant and making a huge deal out of nothing instead of looking past the little things.
We need friends in happy times and sad times because “True friends will be there for you through the good times and the bad” even though that quote is way over used, it is ridiculously true. Your friends are often way more accepting of you than even you are of yourself, yet they make us realize when we are at fault when we fail to realize it ourselves. Friends are one of the few people we can tell our darkest secrets to, and trust just as much as we trust family members. I am so thankful for the friends I have, they keep me on the right track and help make me a better person, my friends have  made me realize that the bottom line is: Bestfriends are priceless, and you need to do what you can to keep them.

30 years too long

kenneth young  Kenneth Young was just a teenager that was at the wrong place at the wrong time, and made some dumb decisions. He was been paying for those decisions as an in-mate in a Hillsborough County jail for the past 30 years for a series of armed robberies, and recently appealed for parole and was denied. Even though this situation is very uncommon, we as teens need to realize that the decisions we make now can effect our future. Things like the grades we get, the people we hangout with, and the sports we play can determine who we are and what we are going to end up like later in life.

Driving to Your Death: Urban Myths

Some people think it's true, and some people think it is completely unrealistic to think that something as simple as flashing your headlights at a driver who appears not to have their lights on would lead to gang violience and killing. However, according to urban myths there are a couple of instances where you can get trapped into danger while thinking you are helping someone out.
The "lights out" legend began in California, and it appears to be a gang initiation. Alot of people think this is a myth becuase this type of story began to appear after the hit movie "Urban Legend" came out in 1993. "Lights Out" is when a group of said to the gang members pile in a car and drive down highways, roads, and side streeets with their headlights off and the first car to flash their lights in order to help them out is followed intil the car reaches their destination and when the people in the car get out, they are killed.
Another said-to-be legend is the infant carseat on the side of the road. This is a newer legend, and reports of this only began in 2010. This is a legend in which a carseat is found on the side of the road; usually a busy highway. A empty carseat is a very sketchy thing so of course people are going to stop and check it out to make sure everything is okay. Inside the carseat there is usually a adress of specific place that points the people in the direction of a missing child or infant. When the people go to this place they are killed.

"Humans are Friends, Not Food."

On Setember 24, 2011 a local 21-year old islander was bitten by a shark not to far off of Anna Maria while he was spearfishing with some friends. The bite was not life threatening however, it was pretty bad. The bite which appears to be of a bull shark ripped the back of Charles Wickersham's right thigh off; so far that it reached the bone. Shortly after being bit, Wickersham was rushed to The Rod n' Reel Peir where paremedics waited for him, and after arriving they flew him on an emergency flight to Bayfront Medical Center in which he immediatly went into surgery to save his leg. A shark attack on Anna Maria is extremely rare, which is making local residents now think twice before jumping in the water whever they may please. Shark attacks are not something that we should constantly live in fear of, however we need to be aware that by going into the ocean we are going into the sharks territory and environment; and they are going to act as they normally would, which is feed themselves.

Dresses in Diapers

It's all about winning, says most of the toddler moms off of TLC's toddlers and tiarras. Winning includes getting the sparkling crowns, the satan sashes, the top titles, and of course the cash. After three years, the viewers and skeptics of this tv show are finally starting to realize that these moms go too far to get their child to win. Things like fake tans, fill-in teeth, extensions, and paddings to fill there daughters out more are just some of the extremes the mothers and sometimes fathers purchase and use to dress up their daughters in order for them to win. The show often seems like the mothers are living through their daughters, whether the daughters like it or not. This is often the case with alot of children, many parents involve their child in sports or activities becuase it is what they "never got to do," and this show is clearly making the point and successfully proving this to viewers.

Newest and Shocking Contestant on Dancing With the Stars

Chaz Bono has quite possibly been the most talked about contestant for upcoming season 13 of Dancing With the Stars. Some people think that he does not belong on the show since he will most likely have the female cordiantion for dancing, and will also have a professional female dancer for the course of the show. There is so much controversy going on, however Chaz says that he remains unaffected by all the talk. If he would have cared what people think, he would have not made his sex change so public, he says that all he knows that has been said so far is that kids are going to be confused about his sex. He argues that this is untrue since he is legally a guy, and kids that are not of the mature age will most likely not be watching the show. Chaz is very thankful to ABC for hiring him to do that job, and hopes that the show is a huge success this season, exepcially becasue he gets to do what he has always wanted, and dance his heart out and hopefully win the disco ball-trophy.

Kate Plus 8 speaks out

Many people know Kate Gosslin as the crazy, controlling, yet very caring mom of sextuplets and twins. Kate Gosslin, the star of the show what is now known as TLC's Kate Plus 8 and was formely known as Jon and Kate Plus 8. She explains to People Magazine about her tremendous journey in rasinging her 8 children while juggling working, writting a book, and a TV show. Kate also admits that the way she is portrayed on the show is extremely embarassing, and that she is often reffered to as "mommy dearest." It is no secret to anyone that watches the show that Kate is very controlling, yet caring. She explains why she thinks that she is portrayed and known as such a lose cannon,

" Sometimes, over two days of shooting for one episode and I have three crabby mommy moments, well, it's guaranteed your going to see them all in 22-minutes show. So, of course that makes it seem like I'm crabby mommy all the time," says Kate Gosslin in the interview.

Although Kate admits to being such a crazed mom, and clearly knowing that her ratings went down after her divorce with husband, Jon Gosslin, she still says that she loves the atmosphere of filming and says that just because TLC has dropped the show doesn't mean she and her family will be off the TV screen for very long.

Red lines, equal guidelines

A new rule that has been adapted at Palmetto High School this year is that students are allowed to use cell phones and iPods before, after, and during lunch at school. This rule change has been in the talks for a long time now, since students in previous years were constanly caught using and sneaking their cell phones in the middle of classes and lunchs, often times using excuses like having to go to the restroom, or to the office so they can sneak a look at their missed calls and reply to their texts. However, it is only the third week of school and there are already problems brewing with this new rule. Also there has been some adjustments. Last week students observed painters that were painting different sets of thick red lines around the perimeters of the cafeteria and the courtyard area. These red lines stand for the boundaries where students can and cannot use their cell phones while they are at lunch, and also before and after school. This is a problem because there are students starting to get into trouble with accidently breaking this rule unknowingly via administration because there has been no announcement or advertisement of this new rule. If a rule change is going to be adjusted this quickly after schoool starts, students at Palmetto High School need to be acceptable and open to change with a positive, mature, and responsible outlook even with this new relaxed rules such as being able to use cell phones.

When is the End of the World?

"No one knows about the day or the hour, not even the angels in heaven, Nor the Son, but only the Father."-Matthew 24:36

There are  various theories of when the "world" will come to an end or when the rapture will happen. Many philosphers, doctors, and ordinary people have proven different thoughts and reasons as the why the world will end on a certain date on our 12 month, 365 day calander. The newest theory is that the world as we know it is coming to an end on May 21, 2011. I do not believe in any of these theories or ideas of factual evidence of the world coming to an end on a predicted date in time. As stated in the Bible, no one knows the date or the hour in which the rapture or end will take place. Jesus made that statement becuase He wants us to enjoy life as we know it, not planning or looking foward to an ending point. We need to live in the moment, not worry about when the world is going to end. When the world ends, we end. If citizens knew the exact time when the ending was coming, they would not strive to success or they would push for things to happen faster and our world would be a complete disaster. Mystery is better than knowing, there of course are always going to be new cenarios or theories becuase people are constantly trying to predict the imposible, all I know is that I am living in the moment, not living for the end.

" After a long and exciting season, the tribe has finally spoken"

Survior is a reality TV series that is staged in many different and unique countries around the world. Each season, there is a set of different contestants to compete for the million dollar prize at the end of the season. The contestants are split into tribes, and vote out their competetor contestants as desired every couple of days. Yes, some people quite due to giving up and some have to be taken out of the game due to injuries. The living conditions are horrid, the contestants are given flint for fire, a bucket of rice, and the clothes that are on their back for the whole 39 days. In challenges the contestants have a chance to win rewards such as pillows, fishing gear, food, and the most important: team or individual immunity. Immunity means that the contestent or the full tribe is safe from being voted out of the game of survivor. After so many contestants are voted off, they form a separate tribe called the "jury"; the jury determines the fate of the winner at the end in which the contests that are left convince the jury as to why they deserve the money and title of soul survivor over their competetors.
This season of survivor was a little different than the normal game. This season, the producers decided to bring back the two most famous "villians" of survivor history to come back and compete for the title of "soul survivor." The two contestants brought back were Boston Rob, and Russle. Russle was taken out early in the game due to the other contestants knowing that he would seize the game the second he got the chance. However, the other tribe did not have the same philosophy or fear of  Boston Rob. Instead of voting him out, they latched onto him. Forming an unbreakable alliance consisting of six people, Boston Rob being the ring-leader in this alliance. Boston Rob had complete control of the game from then on. He had the perfect alliance, won individual immunity idols, and also had the indiviual secret immunity idol that he did not have to use til the very end.
Survivor's theme is "Outwit, Outplay, Outlast". Boston Rob did exactly that. He did have more expierience than the other players in the game however, they all had to oppurtunity to get him out and they chose to allign with him instead. Boston Rob played a game with integrity, secercy, and brains. He is the ultimate example of a soul survivor and deserved every vote that he recieved from the jury in the season finale on May 15. (Boston Rob is pictured on the right)

Brace Face

Straight teeth is a very common things nowadays, especially in young adults and teens. Pretty, white, and straight teeth just go along with the image or idea of success. The process of going through braces is no fun, just ask anyone that has had them.
"Having braces for 2 years has sucked, I can't eat certain foods like carmel apples, they are my favorite,"- Tyler Williford 16, sophomore.
It is proven that having braces, leads to straight teeth and helps improve the individuals speech, bite, and also makes chewing different foods alot easier and less painful as someone that hasn't had braces. Braces help prevent alot of things like gum diseases, and having to pull teeth. They also create the "perfect smile". It is also proven that a beautiful smile leads to higher self-esteem. Higher self-esteem boosts the individuals confidence. Confidence generates sucess, thus stating that people with beautiful smiles have a lot to be happy about.
Many people don't like the idea of braces because they are not very cost friendly. Braces are extremely expensive, and usually are not covered by insurance because they are not necessary. Braces are considered a luxury or a optional choice, along with newly popular invisaline (braces alternative).
I have braces, and I have had them for a little over a year. I agree, they are no fun.  They are hard to maintain and keep up with because they are always breaking or needing to be adjusted. Having braces means I can't eat some of the foods I used to. Something as simple as bitting an apple is extremely hard to do without miss-placing a bracket or breaking a color-band off. Monthly trips to my orthodontist are extremely time consumming, however everytime I go, it means I am one step closer to acheiving that perfect smile!

As American's, We Stand

I was in first grade on September 11,2001. Watching the twin towers fall to the grounds surrounded by smoke and sirens was a scary sight, as I remember watching it all unfold on the news for days. It is still referred to as perhaps, the biggest tragedy in America. As the planes flew straight into those towers, the mystery of who or what country was behind it flabbergasted Americans, all we new was to expect change in America. Eventually, we came to realize that the mastermind behind it all was Osama bin Laden along with many other Iraqi's and people from Afghanistan that spent days planning this terror attack on our nation.
The goal for America since September 11, 2001 has been to seek justice on Osama, and for our nation. President George Bush started it, and President Obama finished it. Neither one President deserves full credit, in fact I believe they both deserve equal credit. Both have control and are leaders of the military and CIA force for America. Neither of them were the masterminds to capture and kill Osama, however in order for anything to happen, the military needed the "ok" from authority, and the authoritve figure happend to be Obama at this point in time.
It is a strange thing, to root for death. It is something considered un-american. In many cases the death of someone is considered a crime, complete accident, or just mother natures affect on a human. But Osama bin Laden's death was not any of these. Osama bin Laden's death was something that needed to be accomplished in order for America to move foward as one nation. The fallout from September 11 is not nearly over, however this chapter has closed, and a new one begins.

Old Man, will always be our number one fan

"You young kids are all so special to me."
These are only a couple of the encouraging words I heard from      Mr. Don at every football game last season, and only one basketball game because he was admitted to the hospital shortly after the season started. Little did we know what huge journey this man has been on, and we now may never know, but I wonder why he never complained and always had such a positive attitude, even when we asked?  Because he was never concerned with himself, when he was at a Palmetto High sporting event, he was AT a Palmetto High Sporting event mentally, and physically. He was completely focused on the students and the game, not himself.
There were times that he seemed more into the football game than the football players themselves, as I observed from the sidelines as a cheerleader on those Friday nights these past two fall seasons. Every time the cheer team seemed down, all we had to do was look up at the stands and see Mr. Don, and instant smiles beamed across all of our faces.
There are not enough kind words I can say about this man, visiting him the the hospital and bringing him cards as he told me they should definitely make me one of those girls they throw in the air because I was a "small little thing" is a memory that I will never forget.
As Palmetto High students say a sad goodbye to Mr. Don, we have to remember that we have tons more support, even though nobody will ever replace the memory of Mr. Don. He will always be remembered as the face of Palmetto High sports fans, and will be greatly missed.

PHS Reputation: Rising From the Ashes

It is clear that Palmetto High School is looked at as an "underdog" school amongst other schools pertaining to sports. Many athletes get frustrated with this, and instead of making them work harder, it makes them want to quit or give up. This frustration has been shown by not only athletes, but with coaches also. Palmetto High School is constantly labled as a bad school, and with that reputation comes a reputation of a bad sports program. This assumtion is untrue. Palmetto High School's coaches and athletes give everything they have every year, in season and out of season and practice hard to improve and get better. Just like any other leading schools in manatee county. But where this frustration comes in, is Palmetto High School is not recognized for this effort, for example; Our soccer team has reached the final four, two years in a row, Our football team has a new head coach and is getting new score boards, helmets, practice gear, etc., Our row team, which is the first of its kind in Manatee County, is up and running and is supported and sponsored by Jane Lynch, our volleyball team bought new uniforms, and our track just was refinished and painted for the upcoming season.
Instead of looking at Palmetto High School as an underdog, we should be looked as a school to expect improvement from. It has taken a while to finally get to a point of success but with dedication and hard work, we are making our way up slowly, but surley. Our community can expect great things from the Palmetto High School sports program in the years to come.

Disaster Strikes

Picture of a tsunami flooding a road after the Japan earthquake
Disaster has stiked yet again. The natural disasters keep coming and this time it has hit Japan. On Friday, March 11, a earthquake and tsunami hit Japan destroying pretty much everything and killing many. Now, the nuclear explosions are expected to not only effect Japan, but other countries and economies around them. It is going to be a very good thing for the United States because it will give our economy the boost it needs to rebuild. Other countries will be depending more on the US for goods and trade, and our country should use that opportunity in a positive way.

Why not wear a helmet?

On Sunday, February 27, two motorcyclists were hospitalized due to a accident in Manatee County. Highway patrol has investigated this case and believes that the accident was casued by a car cutting off the motorcycle. Both victims were airlifted to Tampa General Hospital, due to serious injuries. The victims were not wearing helmets, which is said to be the main cause of these serious injuries.     Wearing Helmets while riding a motorcyle can save your life. However, not everyone thinks it is worth wearing a helmet. Wearing a helmet while driving a motorcyle is not a requirement or law in most states, and the majority of motorcyclist do not wear them since they have the option. It should be a law in every state, not just a select few. Only positive outcomes come from wearing a helmet. It should be as simple as- when you pick up the key, you pick up the helmet. A helmet is the most protective gear you can wear while riding a motorcycle. If you get in a accident it protects your head, which is one of the most easiest things in your body to injure.
Wearing a helmet does not only protect you while driving, it also makes riding a motorcycle more enjoyable. It cuts down the wind-in-your-face factor, the roaring noise, and pressure in your ears. It also keeps the bugs and flying objects out of your face. It also alows the rider to more easily adjust to changing weather conditions.
When I see riders wearing a helmet, I also think to myself, "Wow, they are responsible and take riding seriously." Wearing a helmet shows that you have a good and responsible attitude toward riding, no matter what the law says or doesn't say.

No One to Blame..

It was a choice, to pull the trigger.
Nicholas Lindsey, a 16 year old is being charged with murder of Officer David Crawford. He pulled the trigger. It was his choice and he will be paying the price. There is no-one to blame but Lindsey. His parents had no idea of how he got the gun, or what his where-abouts were on the night of the shooting. I don't think any blame should be placed on the parents. No matter what you go through or what your up-bringing is, nobody has the right to end someone elses life. Especially not someone that is in authority to protect you.
Something that could have prevented the death of Officer Crawford was if he was wearing a bulletproof vest. He was not wearing one at the time of the shooting because he was on duty as a patrol. There was nothing stopping the bullet, therefore it killed him instantly.
There has been 9 fallen police officers in the past year in Florida, the number just keeps building. The fact that there are so many precations that are overlooked when going into a crime seen is what is causing these frequent deaths. Police Officers risk their lives every day for citizens, but in order to keep their lives safe they need to take more precautions before entering a potentially dangerous situation.

The Royal Wedding

Prince Henry and Kate Middleton are looking foward to their royal wedding on April 29. The wedding is in talks to be one of the most extravagant weddings of the century. It is one to be remembered. The invitations have been sent out, and there are 1900 guests to be expected at the wedding. Celeberties like David and Victoria Beckham, Sir Elton John, and also various memebers of the royal family and royalty throught the world are expected to be there. The ceremony is going to be at Westminster Abbey, in Englad.

Cancer's Youngest Survivors

Most children look foward to school, playing on the playground, and snacktime. Ellie Edwards didn't.
